Magazine Industry

The first modern-style magazine was ‘The Gentleman’s Magazine’ in 1731, founded in London by Edward Cave. It covered topics such as literature, culture and politics. In the mid-1800s, illustrated magazines like ‘The Illustrated London News’ became popular, combining journalism with illustrated storytelling. The early 20 th Century saw an increase in lifestyle magazines, typically gendered, and by the late 20 th Century, magazines began to be multinational media conglomerates, reflecting Curran and Seaton’s power and the media theory. Now, due to the rise of technology and digital media, print circulation has been declining 5-10% each year, with digital editions being 25% of all magazine readership in the UK. Despite facing a decline in print circulation, the UK magazine market had a market size of £4.1 billion in 2024 as digital subscriptions are growing. There are around 1,400 consumer magazines in the UK, and the UK magazine industry employs 50,000 people including editors, journ...

Magazine Cover Analysis Three

Image
In this travel magazine cover for Conde Nast Traveller, it uses a colour palette of blue, green and white to convey the mood of relaxation to the audience. This is important as the magazine’s target audience is travellers who can afford a luxurious holiday. Furthermore, the main image is of a woman laying on a sunbed, surrounded by water, with a mountain in the background and a blue, cloudy sky. This further emphasises the soothing atmosphere as the woman is sunbathing as opposed to partaking in adventurous holiday activities. The masthead on the cover is interesting as it is tropical green leaves rather than a block colour, attracting our attention, and the dateline of “April 2016” is beneath this. The cover consists of 4 different fonts and 3 different font sizes with text in green, black and white. To communicate the travel theme, the cover lines all directly link to different countries and experiences such as “cabin fever”, “most stylish places to live in Rome” and “what’s co...

Magazine Cover Analysis Two

Image
In this magazine by Total Film Magazine, the cover’s main focus is the film ‘Cruella’, and effectively communicates this through the colour palette of red, black, white and green – the main colours associated with the famous Disney villain. As well as this, the masthead has been designed to match the aesthetics of Cruella as the word ‘film’ has patterns like a dalmatian, a large part of her story. Furthermore, the main image is of Emma Stone in costume as Cruella, playing the character through her serious, slightly angry facial expression that she presents to the camera, referencing the film. The background is red, contrasting her black and white costume while matching her lipstick. The supporting images on this magazine are Michael B Jordan playing Jordan Clark in ‘Without Remorse’, and Margot Robbie playing Harley Quinn in ‘Suicide Squad’. These images accompany their related cover lines such as ‘On set exclusive: Without Remorse’ for Jordan and ‘Bad Gals! Celebrating cinema’s ...

Magazine Cover Analysis One

Image
In this magazine cover by Vanity Fair, it uses a colour palette of lime green for the main image and background, and black and white for the text. This makes the cover vibrant and therefor eye-catching for potential buyers as it would contrast against duller magazines in shop displays. Furthermore, the main image is of actress Lupita Nyong’o wearing a green dress, and she’s facing the right side but maintains eye contact with the camera, making the reader feel acknowledged. The background has nature such as trees and grass, linking to the green theme which is elevated through a colour filter of lime green. Despite both her dress and the background being green, the different shades allow Nyong’o to contrast the background as opposed to blending in. This cover consists of around 4 different fonts, and around 4 font sizes, using primarily black as the text colour. As well as this, the masthead ‘Vanity Fair’ is the boldest font and is positioned at the top of the page, going behind N...
